Australia’s Humanitarian Response to Myanmar Earthquake Survivors
A powerful earthquake has struck Myanmar, leaving a devastating impact on the country. The earthquake has already claimed over 3600 lives and injured more than 5017 people, with the death toll expected to rise as rescuers gain access to more affected areas. Homes, businesses, and essential infrastructure have been destroyed, leaving survivors in dire need of food, water, shelter, and medical care. The scale of destruction has prompted an urgent Myanmar relief effort, with the United Nations reporting that more than 17.2 million people are living in affected areas and in urgent need of food, drinking water, health care, cash assistance, and emergency shelter.
Australia’s Humanitarian Response
Australia is boosting its humanitarian support for Myanmar, building on an initial $2 million ICRC contribution with:
- $3.5M for Australian NGOs delivering food, water, sanitation, health, and education aid.
- $500K to the Emergency Action Alliance appeal for urgent relief.
- $3M for emergency supplies via the ASEAN Coordinating Centre.
Deployment of an Australia Assists rapid response team for on-ground coordination.
This vital aid will help communities recover from the devastating earthquake.
Australia’s additional contribution is outlined in the joint media release from Minister for International Development and the Pacific, The Hon. Pat Conroy MP, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong. For more details, visit Penny Wong’s Media Release on Further Humanitarian Assistance to Myanmar.
This essential aid will support those impacted by the earthquake, providing immediate relief and helping rebuild lives.
However, the situation is further complicated by military air strikes in the affected areas, which continue to worsen the suffering of the people. These actions have made it even more difficult for humanitarian organisations to deliver aid. The Emergency Action Alliance strongly condemns these actions and urges the Myanmar military regime to cease hostilities and allow unimpeded Myanmar relief efforts.
